Suspects busted for producing drugs worth R54 million in Welkom
The Hawks have uncovered a major set of drugs worth millions of rands in Welkom, Free State and in Gauteng on Sunday, 09 May 2021.
Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel. Philani Nkwalase said three suspects were arrested, after drugs were confiscated in Welkom and Mayfield Park in Johannesburg.
“Three suspects aged between 31 and 54 were apprehended in an intelligence-driven operation that went undercover from Welkom and headed to Johannesburg,” he said.
According to Nkwelase, it is alleged that the suspects were using two compounds in Welkom, Free State and Mayfield Park in Gauteng to facilitate drugs.
Nkwelase said the first two suspects were arrested after being found with 11 packets of mandrax worth street value of R900 000 hidden in their vehicle.
“After finding a lead, we headed to Mayfield Park, where we arrested the third suspect, and uncovered mandrax tablets that amounted to R910 000, three kilograms of crystal meth and huge pack of chemicals worth R400 000,” he added.
During the undercover, the Hawks seized millions of rands, four vehicles that includes of the VW Polo, a Ford Ranger double cab, VW GTI and Isuzu, and a bunch of substance chemicals.
