Congress of the people (COPE) media briefing turned into a cat’s fight between two factions of the party, where fists fled in the air, in a move to bar embattled party leader Mosiua Lekota from addressing the media.
The party’s beleaguered leader called for an immediate briefing to defend himself against what he labelled as a ‘illegitimate move to oust him’ by the faction spearheaded by his second in command, deputy president, Willie Madisha.
A disgruntled group of the party belonging to Madisha, entered and disrupted the party leader’s briefing, as they claimed that they will not allow the trouble-ridden president to say a single word.
Gauteng Cope acting-general secretary Mxolisi Ntombela said: “We are here to say that this factionalist that have been called here are not the real members of Cope.
“There are the people that are destroying Cope, these are the mafias… We [are] saying to him he has got no right to come here and address Cope,” added Ntombela.
Lekota was placed under precautionary suspension for allegedly sowing divisions.
On Monday, August 29, Lekota overturned tables and raspingly announced the suspension of Madisha, secretary for communications Dennis Bloem, and secretary for elections, Mzwandile Hleko.
