Bethlehem mother admits food poisoning, killing her husband and children

A 31-year-old woman who headlined news for dishing food poison which led to the death of four family members, with one in critical condition at the hospital, made a brief appearance before the Bethlehem Magistrate Court today, June 24.

Maphephi Alinah Mokwena, confessed of poisoning her three daughters and their father at the Magistrate Court.

The accused together with her younger sister, Mantwa Maria Mokwena, are facing three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

The father aged 49, and two girls, 14 and 10 years died of poisoning.

On Wednesday morning, June 22, the family was served brown bean soup by Maria Mokwena before they went to school and work. 

Later on, children complained of stomach pain while they were in school and theywere taken to hospital where they died.

Their father also fell ill while at work, and was taken to hospital where he also lost his life.

Police spokesperson captain Phumelelo Dhlamini said the post-mortem revealed that, the cause of death was food poisoning. 

Maphephi, the mother, is remanded in custody till end of this month for a formal bail application, while Mantwa was released on a warning and she will again appear on court on the day of bail application.
