Welkom cable thieves caught red-handed while burning large quantity of copper cable

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested four copper cable thieves who were caught burning large quantity of copper in Mannys, Welkom.

The Welkom police who were on a vehicle patrol at Mannys, noticed a large amount of smoke coming from the railway line on Tuesday, 10 May at about 07:45.

“Two (police officers) approached a scene, where there was a huge smoke and there were more than four African male persons who ran away when noticing the police members,” Lejweleputswa region spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng said.

“They called a back up to catch the fleeing suspects, but nobody was arrested and the copper on fire was seized,” explained Thakeng.

Thakeng said the copper cable weighed 290,5 kg with the street value of R31 955 and was kept at SAPS store room.

“Destruction of the infrastructure is a concern in Matjhabeng, so to seize this large quantity of copper cable is a breakthrough. Thanks to observant members of Lejweleputswa District Reaction Team,” addressed Thakeng.
