Tragic air crash claims lives of Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima and others

Malawi has been plunged into mourning from today, June 11, as news spread of the tragic air crash that claimed the lives of Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others.

The incident, which occurred on June 10, 2024, shook the nation to its core, leaving behind a sense of profound loss and sorrow.

The plane ultimately crashed in Chikangawa Forest, claiming the lives of all onboard. The news sent shockwaves throughout Malawi.

President Lazarus Chakwera said in a media briefing that the wreckage of the plane that went missing Monday morning was located after a search of more than 24 hours in thick forests and hilly terrain near the city of Mzuzu.

“The wreckage was found near a hill and the plane had been completely destroyed, with everyone killed on impact,” said the President.

Chilima who was 51, he was a prominent figure in Malawian politics, had served as Vice President for a decade, contributing significantly to the country’s development and progress.

Born on February 12, 1973, in Ntcheu, Malawi, Chilima was a highly educated individual, holding a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Malawi and a Master of Science in Economics from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

Before entering politics, Chilima had a successful career in the private sector, notably serving as the CEO of Airtel Malawi, one of the country’s leading telecommunications companies.

His leadership skills and dedication to public service propelled him into the political arena, where he quickly rose through the ranks to become Vice President in 2014, alongside President Lazarus Chakwera.
