Phakama Ntete who suffered a rape ordeal in the hands of a family member, vent through her book- ‘A Freed Soul’

Phakama Ntete is an Author, born and bred in uMzimkulu Kwazulu Natal.

Her passion for writing was ignited during her teenage years. She was that girl who always had a book and pen, jotting down everything from feelings to anything that crossed her mind however she says she has never envisioned being an author.

She penned down a book tiled “A Freed Soul”, the book accounts for her unpleasant upbringing, sharing her journey of healing her soul, with the aim of inspiring others who find themselves in similar situations.

Book author, Phakama Ntete.

According to Phakama, after spending her life trapped by bitterness and pain due to her upbringing, she finally gained the courage to work on healing her soul and building a better and more meaningful life.

When she was nine years old, her mother gave her to family members to raise her but sadly she was treated very bad. She was deprived food at times, other times her food would be different from others. painful words were uttered to her daily.

Phakama was treated like a servant, doing chores all the time. She became a victim of sexual abuse done by a family member when she was 13 and kept quiet about it because of how painful her life was.

The Author reiterated that her painful experience made her feel inadequate. It triggered a lot of self-doubt about what she was capable of.

In her view, many people continue to experience what she went through while growing up, and some end up taking their lives because they feel that nothing will ever change in their lives. She is trying to tell these people that after suffering and disappointment, it is still possible to heal and live a fulfilling and meaningful life.

“Healing takes time and people go about it in a different manner. Some believe time heals all wounds while others believe in seeking help in order to get healed” said Phakama.

When asked if people should proactively confront whatever baggage they have from the past or they should let time deal with it.

She said the notion that time heals is a lie and that people should get up and seek help in order to heal.

“Time does not heal. If it did, I would have also healed without having to seek help and actively work on myself. When you have not faced your baggage and dealt with it, it keeps showing up in every aspect of your life and you will not understand why you react in a certain way to certain situations until you go back and deal with your pain” said Phakama.

Some people don’t like tackling painful experiences head on, they just push it aside with the hope that it will eventually go away. Phakama says it is dangerous and unhealthy.

“As we all know that hurt people, hurt people. When you are hurt you will unconsciously go around bleeding on everyone around you. Remember you cannot give that which you do not have so when your heart is harbouring anger and pain that is what you will be sharing with others” said Phakama

She says that it was a painful experience to pen down the book as it opened old wounds.

There were times she had to book a session for therapy and a Coaching session to go over everything again and deal with it before she could proceed writing it.

Her message to people who haven’t dealt with their childhood traumas is for them to heal from within.

“The best gift you can give yourself, your loved ones and the world is to heal your soul. As we know that hurt people, hurt people. Healed people heal people” said Phakama.

The author shared some tools in the last chapter of the book to help others heal from whatever wounds they are carrying from the past. Grab yours and heal.
