Karabo Morapedi, a 22-year-old from Welkom, Free State, is a beacon of determination and achievement.
Born with cerebral palsy quadriplegia, a condition that impacts all four limbs and results in various physical and intellectual difficulties, Karabo refuses to let his disability hinder his aspirations.
Karabo is set to represent South Africa at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. His story is a testament to the power of support and perseverance in overcoming obstacles and reaching remarkable heights.
Morapedi has been competing at the World Boccia African Regional Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
Boccia, a Paralympic sport, requires precise muscle control and accuracy, highlighting the athlete’s skill and determination.
Karabo’s introduction to Boccia began at Tswellang Special School in Bloemfontein, which offers mainstream education and support for physically challenged learners. He continued his Boccia journey at Martie du Plessis School in Bloemfontein, a specialized institution for students with cerebral palsy and other physical and learning disabilities.
After completing his matriculation, Karabo pursued Boccia at the Central University of Technology (CUT) Welkom Campus, where he earned a National Diploma in Public Management this year. He is now advancing his studies with an Advanced Diploma in Applied Public Management.
Bochedi emphasized that Karabo’s success challenges the perception that disabilities confine individuals to their homes. “Karabo’s achievements demonstrate that living with a disability doesn’t mean you can’t achieve greatness. His progress has made us incredibly proud,” she added. “The support from CUT and his coach motivates him to strive for even greater heights.”
