Jagersfontein residents, including several elderly people, were evacuated to safety on Sunday morning after a mine dam burst and caused flooding in the area, which led to the collapse of several houses.
According to the reports, the Jagersfontein mine dam burst earlier this morning, authorities comprising of the emergency personnel and the police descended to the affected area and encouraged residents to leave their homes in order to save lives.
The Free State department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs’ disaster management team have moved residents to safer places, such as community halls.
The road entering Jagersfontein from Bloemfontein is reportedly flooded and remain closed.
At present, four people are reportedly missing, while seven people were rescued from the mud slide.
Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela issued a statement where she said 20 people have been taken to Diamant Hospital in Jagersfontein after they sustained injuries while four others are enroute to Albert Nzula hospital in Trompsburg.
No fatalities have been reported yet.
Another emerging reports reveals that farmers have lost their cattle, with another farmer’s bunch of sheep washed away.
