Hundreds of illegal immigrants, 5 armed suspects busted in Wepener

Five suspects who were caught red-handed with unlicensed firearms and live ammunition in the roadblock have appeared before the Wepener Magistrate Court, yesterday, 7 June.

According to Free State police spokesperson, Brigadier Motansi Makhele, police officers and South African National Defence Force did a roadblock on roads R702 and R26, of which according to him is the unguarded border in Wepener.

“At about 00:45, the convoy of 13 Toyota quantum, a grey Toyota regious, red Volkswagen golf and grey BMW 523i approached the roadblock and the first Toyota quantum failed to stop as it was indicated by the official in the roadblock.

“Shots were fired from the minibus and the officials on the roadblock returned fire. One male was slightly injured during the crossfire and rushed to the hospital in Bloemfontein,” explained Makhele.

Thereafter, all vehicle were searched. Approximately 158 passengers were migrating to South Africa without proper documentations and they arrested as illegal immigrants.

Inside one of the vehicle of which was a BMW Sedan many illegal items were found hidden, these are inclusive of; 9mm model 75 Cal. 8 PARA: Czekoslovakia pistol with a magazine loaded with 16 live rounds, 7.65 Walther with a magazine loaded with seven rounds and two lose 7.65mm.

Those who were found inside BMW were between ages of 24 and 39.

“We commend joint effort by the SAPS and South African National Defence Force, in making sure they stop this lawlessness which was about to take place,” said provincial commissioner, general Baile Motswenyane.
