Home Affairs official in custody for allegedly extorting R6 000 from foreign national

Two Home Affairs officials have now been arrested for contravening the department’s policy on unlawful and fraudulent activities, after the duo demanded R6 000 from the foreign national.

Home Affairs official, Goitsemang Sediti, handed herself over to the Hawks, after warrant of arrest was issued for her involvement in the alleged fraudulent activity.

According to Free State Hawks spokesperson Christopher Singo, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit based in Bloemfontein, received a wake up call about the Home Affairs senior immigration officer who demanded R6 000 from a foreign national for the release of his sibling, who was busted for not having proper documentation to be in the country.

“A sting operation was then conducted on Thursday, May 26, where the police arrested Leballo Maqalika after he was found with R6 000, the money he demanded from the victim,” said Singo.

Detailing further, Singo said the Hawks delved deeper into the investigations, where it was discovered that Sediti was also part of the criminal syndicate with her counterpart, Maqalika.

“Following her arrest, the accused, Sediti, then made her appearance before the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court today where she faced charges of corruption,” Singo added.

The case against Sediti has been remanded to next week Monday, July 11 for bail application.
