Hawks pounce on ex-Lejweleputswa municipal managers for looting Brandfort museum funds

The Hawks in the Free State arrested five officials this morning, including former municipal managers at the Lejweleputswa district municipality for their alleged involvement in the scandalous Winnie Mandela Museum funds that went missing.

More than R700 000 was lost due to the alleged fraud and corruption.

Hawks spokesperson captain Christopher Singo, says the alleged nabbed suspects also includes former department head at the department of sports, arts and culture; and two officials from Gauteng Province.

“Five suspects between the ages of 41 and 81 were arrested this morning in Free State and Gauteng Provinces by the Hawks,” confirmed Singo.

It is alleged that during the period of January 2008 until December 2010, over R700 000 was allocated to the Brandfort Museum project popularly known as the Winnie Mandela Museum.

“The money that was allocated was then misused and the service providers were appointed without following the proper procurement processes.

“The project was coordinated by the sports, arts and culture and Lejweleputswa district municipality,” detailed Singo.

All suspects are expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrates Court tomorrow, September 21, where they will be facing charges of fraud, theft and contravention of public finance management act.

The Hawks says there will be more arrests.
