The minister of police, Bheki Qele, has announced that GBV and femicide remain a priority for the SAPS in a media briefing on Friday, 18 February 2022.
Qele called on to all police officers to further improve their police services to GBV and femicide victims and survivors.
During the briefing, the minister said 381 police stations nationwide have been equipped with GBV front desks. He also announced that the establishment will be finalised by the end of March 2022. This means all police stations in the country will have the GBV front desk.
In an attempt to improve victim-centred service, the ministry has trained more than 91 489 police officers in victim empowerment, domestic and sexual offences related crimes.
According to Qele, detectives throughout the country prioritise crimes against women with the help of strategic and technical police departments.
In less than a year, more than 272 life sentenced were handed down for crimes against women and children.
