Bongani Edwin Mokoena (29), a professional opera musician from Welkom, recently received a scholarship from the Berlin Opera Academy in Germany. His application, which included videos, was successful, and he was chosen as a festival singer in their summer production.
Bongani is incredibly grateful for this opportunity, as it will greatly benefit his career in music. “I have being
looking forward to go abroad to enhance my singing and take my career to the next level,” he said.
He believes that this experience will help him to secure a better job when he returns home with his qualification from Germany.
His journey with singing began at a young age, when his teacher at Ramaphofu Primary School forced him to join the school choir in 2007.
He continued singing throughout high school, but never imagined that he could make his living through it. “It was in high school when I was selected to do a solo that I started to recognize my potential,” Mokoena said, detailing how he became aware of his talent.
He also joined several choirs and competed in various varsity competitions which were televised. Although they sang choral music in the choirs, it was at the National Choir Festival (NCF) that he was first exposed to opera music, and he became increasingly passionate about it.
He also auditioned at Odeion School of Music in the University of the Free State, where he received singing lessons.
Bongani firmly believes there are more chances for the youth in the music industry.
This is due to the fact that opera music has seen a surge in South Africa in the recent years and there are plenty of academies offering proper training in this genre. “To be successful in opera music, one has to remain open to learning and continually hone their skills,” he stated.
At this point, Bongani requires support with sponsorship for his journey to Germany. He must submit his travel information before 10th January to ensure his enrollment in the Berlin Opera Academy.
He is eager to perform in various events to collect funds for his voyage to Germany and make his dream a reality.
