Two security officers were robbed their two firearms and tied up with cable ties when eight armed suspects attempted to access the mine premises in Theunissen, Free State.
According to Welkom police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng, the incident took an effect during early hours of today, during twilight where security personnel at the mine premises were overpowered and robbed.
“A security officer was pointed with a firearm and overpowered by suspects with three vehicles and tied up with cable ties,” captain Thakeng revealed to Kasi Voice News.
According to captain Thakeng, the suspects fled away with two firearms, namely, 9mm BAAN 617 with magazine and 15 live ammunitions and another 9mm firearm with a magazine and 17 live ammunitions.
“Both were tied up with cable ties and forced in the back part of their patrol bakkie. They proceeded to another security who had no firearm but was ordered to lie on the ground,” he said.
It is reported that, the suspects could not gain entrance into the plant and drove off.
“A Boiler maker was called out to attend to emergency at the mine and was driving his grey Volkswagen Passat with FS number plate.
“He heard gun shots on his vehicle and managed to sped off to the security offices. He was shot by these suspects who thought he came to rescue the security officers,” added captain Thakeng.
Captain Thakeng said the security officer didn’t sustained any injuries.
“The suspects drove off with two white Mercedes Benz and a red Mercedes Benz with unknown number plates,” he further addressed.
The incident was reported to Theunissen police and a case of armed robbery and attempted murder case was registered for further investigation.
