Swift police response leads to quick arrest of copper thieves

The Brandfort police were on vehicle patrol when they received a tip-off, about someone in possession of copper cable. The vehicle was stopped and copper cable was found, seized and four suspects were arrested.

According to Welkom police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng, police officers noticed a grey sedan traveling towards Bloemfontein and they drove closer and indicated to the driver to stop.

“There were four occupants and they requested permission to search the vehicle,” revealed captain Thakeng.

“While they were busy searching, copper cable was found and they could not provide any documents to be in possession thereof.

“The four suspects aged from 25, 31, 37 and 55-years-old were arrested for possession of copper cable and the vehicle a grey Chevrolet Spark with FS number plates was also seized,” he said.

The suspects will appear before the Brandfort Magistrate Court, on Monday, 6 December 2021.

The district commissioner of Lejweleputswa, major general Lerato Molale welcomed the arrests and seizure of the copper cable.

“It’s clear we continue to clamp down on all those destroying the infrastructure,” she praised the two members of Brandfort for a job well done.
