Citizens responded with a dismay and disgruntled feeling over the increase of fuel prices.
This comes after mineral resources and energy minister Gwede Mantashe made a shocking announcement on Saturday that there will be an increase in petrol and diesel prices.
According to Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) that was released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) about 648 000 formal non-agricultural jobs were lost in the second quarter of the year in 2020.
This was due to hard restrictions imposed in the nation wide lockdown.
These statistics have heavily affected purchasing of cars amid fears of excessive fuel prices in the copuntry.
Meanwhile, economists have also lashed out on government claiming it has come to the end of all possibilities with the petrol price hikes, while indicating that next month in April we might face another rapid increase of fuel prices.
“Government can no longer rely on the slate levy and other mechanisms to soften the blow of fuel price hikes in South Africa, with more of the increased costs being passed onto consumers,” Investec chief economist Annabel Bishop told Business Tech.
She also stated that global oil prices and further rand weakness are likely to be heavily dependent on the level of aggression seen in Ukraine by Russia.
“With the war remaining only between these two countries, there is little current likelihood perceived of a third world war,” she said.
South Africans shared their opinions on Twitter.
One tweet said “ By this time next year a litre of petrol will be over R30, under Zuma it was not like this Banna”
Meaning the former President Jacob Zuma was a better leader than Cyril Ramaphosa.
The other tweet highlighted on how the ruling part, ANC is corrupt and blamed the party for stealing, looting and increasing petrol prices.
