The Welkom Social Crime Prevention officers fulfilled the mandate of raising gender based violence campaign to farm workers Saturday, 28 August 2021.
This initiative was in conjunction with Women’s Month Celebration.
The campaign was facilitated by Welkom Rural Safety Coordinator, Warrant Officer Jeremia Moreki, Community Policing Officer, Captain Kenalemang Mphatsoe, Sector 5 Manager, Sergeant Ndawo Towa, Sector 2 Manager Sergeant Motshidisi Mochudi and Constable Meitjie Jacobs, Domestic Violence Coordinator as they visited Esparanza farm in the district of Welkom.

More than 19 sanitary towels were handed to the Esperanza farm women as part of door-to-door campaign, while children were spoiled with oranges and Simba chips.
In this campaign men, women and children were briefed about acts of gender based violence, domestic violence and anti-rape.
Women and children were encouraged to break the silence by reporting these heinous crimes happening in their lives.
A six-year-old girl child was found alone without her mother, as it is alleged that her mother disappeared for over two months, as she claimed to go and see her boyfriend in Thabong.

It is further addressed that, prior to this case, officers responsible for family violence, child protection and sexual offences were called to the scene, in which assistance from social development was also lodged to attend to this desperate situation.
As the initiative progressed, the situation was found to be not conducive, as children were found with no birth certificates, with their parents having no Identity Documents.
In a statement issued by District SAPS, it is said that, Home Affairs will also be called to assist the needy.
