Residents demand immediate intervention from Masilonyana Local Municipality over water crisis

In a unified show of determination, the residents of Masilo and Theunissen joined forces on Friday, January 20, in a community march, marking a collective effort to address pressing issues plaguing their locality.

The focal point of the march was the handover of a Memorandum of Demands to the Masilonyana Local Municipality, with councillor Makata receiving the memorandum on behalf of the council.

The paramount concern expressed in the memorandum revolves around the water crisis that has engulfed the area since the vandalization of the water treatment plant in December 2023.

The community’s demand for swift action to rectify this crisis was clear and resolute.

However, the concerns voiced by the community extended beyond the water crisis.

One of the prominent demands was the removal of mayor Dimakatso Modise, citing alleged failures to deliver essential services.

The community also called for improvements in various sectors, including the establishment of new schools, land distribution, revitalization of sports facilities, the creation of a skills and youth development center, housing for railway workers, road maintenance, and non-renewal of the Seaben contractor.

Additionally, the residents urged the withdrawal of legal actions initiated by the municipality against landless residents. These demands collectively reflect a call for comprehensive and transformative changes in the local governance and infrastructure.

The Masilonyana Local Municipality has been given a deadline of 7 working days to respond to the multifaceted demands, underscoring the urgency felt by the community.

Notably, certain critical demands are expected to be addressed within a shorter timeframe of 24 hours, highlighting the immediacy attached to these particular issues.
