Free State govt hands-out R1m to Memel young entrepreneurs

A whooping R1 million support fund for Memel township’s young entrepreneurs was handed out by the Free State government as part of empowerment promise by the province.

Yesterday June 25, Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela together with MEC for the Department of Economic Small Business Development , Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA Makalo Mohale, embarked on an outreach programme targeting Phumelela’s youth.

DESTEA, a leading developmental institution that drive environmentally sustainable economic growth and transformation for the benefit of the province, interacted with youth-owned businesses in the area for a week, where they assessed that their entreprises needs funding.

The program was held in Memel, a community of just under 8000 people.

The poverty-stricken community filled with joblessness is located on the borders of Mpumalanga and Kwa-Zulu Natal provinces.

This visit granted the government an opportunity to openly engage with the Memel community and surrounding towns of Phumelela.

During the programme, all problems facing young people’s businesses were laid on the table and apparently, opportunities are all the youth need.

Entrepreneurship has certainly gained some ground in rural communities as more and more youngsters aspire not to be employed, but create their own jobs.

“With the rampant unemployment and poverty levels, those who wish to establish their businesses will assist government greatly in reducing soaring unemployment numbers,” highlighted Ntombela.

“This youth entrepreneurship consultative programme is evidence that, time for lip service is over,” she added.

Yesterday’s programme, benefitted four young entrepreneurs to a collective of R1 million to develop and expand their businesses.

Furthermore, others were provided with offices to operate their businesses, whilst others received resources such as laptops for record keeping, registrations and other business needs.

“We appeal to the leadership of Phumelela Local Municipality to speedily assist those who still need assistance,” said the Premier.

I further applaud MEC Mohale and his officials for also bringing officials from Free State Development Corporation, Free State Gaming, Liquor and Tourism Authority and many other entities,” she added.

The Premier also took the opportunity to officially handover ‘long-awaited’ title deeds to residents of Zamani in Memel.
