Duo arrested for defrauding Sibanye-Stillwater R800k

Two suspects accused of defrauding Sibanye-Stillwater over R800 000, were arrested by the Free State Hawks unit based in Welkom.

The duo, Hendrik George Janse Van Rensburg (60) and Joseph Michael Kitching (55) are set to appear before the Theunissen District Court on Monday next week, 19 May.

“Their arrest is derived from the incident which took place in 2018 between January to September, where the accused submitted a claim at Sibanye-Stillwater in Theunissen for the labour they failed to fulfill,” said Free State Hawks captain Christopher Singo.

“During the period of this fraudulent activities, Kitching was an employee of Sibanye-Stillwater, while Van Rensburg was working for Zorrex mining, a company contracted at Sibanye-Stillwater to do mud loading,” he added.

Singo said prior to the contract termination between Zorrex mining and Sibanye-Stillwater, Van Rensburg and Kitching opted to a submit a fraudulent claim for the services that was already rendered by employees of Sibanye-Stillwater.

In this result, the mine suffered a total loss of R800 000.

The case against the duo has been postponed to next month 9 June, they are currently out of prison as they were granted R10 000 bail each.
