The Hawks in Free State have scored another success in efforts to clampdown on the major theft affecting the country’s railway network.
Ten suspects were arrested for tempering with essential railway infrastructure in Vrede, Free State.
According to Hawks spokesperson in the province, captain Christopher Singo, the Hawks’ investigation team based in Bethlehem are investigating a case of tempering with infrastructure and theft of railway track parts.
The suspects busted are aged between 25 and 59-years-old.
It is alleged that on Thursday, 24 March, the police received information about the tempering of essential infrastructure at Ascent road near Vrede.
“The police immediately attended to the information and when they arrived at Klipfontein farm they found the suspects offloading railway track parts from a trailer,” says Singo.
“Preliminary investigation established that the track parts were removed from a railway line on the farm,” he adds.
Singo said the case was further handed over to the Hawks’ for further investigation.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
