Several people have went missing in the wake of the devastating floods that struck Jagersfontein past month, in September, leaving families in an agonizing state of limbo, while others are still in distraught.
Last month, a slimes dam wall collapsed in the mining township, resulting in one fatality and numerous injuries.
Free State police spokesperson Peter Kareli said the police’s K9 search and rescue unit teams have been dispatched to the area to continue with the search to find more other people who are still missing.
“The team [the police] continues to search the area for the reported missing victims, this is after we discovered a body on Friday, September 30, 16 kilometres from where the mine incident occurred,” Kareli said.
Several families who lost their homes to mudslides are still grieving the tragedy.
The collapse of the slimes dam with an embankment that stores by-products from mining – swept away homes and cars and flooded the town with a deluge of mine waste and mud.
