More than 10 African men allegedly robbed large quantities of copper cables from the Matjhabeng Sub Station in Welkom at gun point just passed midnight, today.
According to the Lejweleputswa police spokesperson, captain Stephen Thakeng, two security personnel were overpowered by a group of African men while guarding the sub station.
“The perpetrators allegedly kicked them with booted shoes, robbed them a pellet gun and a company cellphone. They then tied the security guards with cable ties,” added Thakeng.
Using unknown instruments, suspects cut large copper cables and fled the scene.
One security guard managed to untie himself and walked to the Welkom/ Virginia road to seek for help. As a result, a security vehicle came to his aid and summoned an ambulance.
“The other security guard was admitted to one of the hospitals in Matjhabeng.
Following these events, the police registered a case of theft and tempering with infrastructure for further investigation.
As a result of this crime, the Welkom CBD, parts of Doorn, Bronville, Mandela Park, Extension 15 and Thabong Sewerage Treatment Plant became some of the places affected.
“Anyone with information to trace these armed robbers can contact detective warrant officer Elliot Khutsoane of Welkom Detective Services on 0609859330. Alternatively, one can use the Crime Stop number, 0860010111,” concludes Thakeng.
