Bloemfontein High Court to rule on Ace Magashule and co’s bid to have corruption case dropped

The suspended ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule and his co-accused will today return to the Bloemfontein High Court to hear if their application to have the corruption case over the asbestos audit scandal dropped will be in their favour.

Magashule and 16 others face multiple charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering.

In March, the high court dismissed with costs the application by Magashule to have the corruption charges thrown out.

In February, the High Court postponed the case to allow the extradition of Magashule’s former personal assistant, Moroadi Cholota, from the United States.

Magashule’s lawyer, Laurence Hodes, argued that there was no proof that the head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had authorised charges against the former premier.

He further argued that his client was not given ample time to respond to the allegations pinned against him.

Magashule argued that the state was being used by his political foes to tarnish his political career.

He also highlighted that he must be allowed to prove his innocence in court as, there are no charges or witnesses against him.

Former Free State Premier and his co-accused are charged in connection with the controversial asbestos tender issued by the Free State government during his tenure as premier in 2015.
