Two students face public violence, property destruction charges

The Phuthaditjhaba POP arrested two students at the UFS-Qwaqwa Campus Monday, 14 March after allegedly damaging university property and barricading R57 for hours.

According to the police report, UFS-Qwaqwa students demonstrated violent behaviour at the campus.

When the police engaged them, students blocked the main road for traffic. Furthermore, the students pelted the police with stones, damaging state vehicles and other properties within the campus.

After a while, the police finally managed to disperse the group, but the saga did not end there.

The unsatisfied students burnt a tyre outside R57, and the police arrested two suspects from the scene.

Duo students appeared before Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 15 March, facing malicious damage to property and public violence.

So far, the situation at the campus has proven to be calm with no signs of students near the campus. The police have also been monitoring the premises and the vicinity.
