President Ramaphosa says plans are underway to build over 10 000 houses in Free State

With the immense pressure facing the Free State provincial government’s department of Human Settlements, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the national government will reduce the burden facing the department to build over 10 000 houses this financial year.

After listening to angry and emotional residents who raised their deepest concerns at the Presidential Imbizo, Ramaphosa said plans are underway to construct RDPs.

“I acknowledge that , there are a number of incomplete housing projects in the province,” he said.

“Government is attending to areas in the outskirts where promises were made and there was no delivery,” said Ramaphosa.

Minister of Human Settlements, Mmamoloko Kubayi said her department is also keeping a close eye on the asbestos-roof removal, a project which has been a long overdue in the Province.

The minister stated that the ministry has allocated R30 million for the asbestos roof removal project in the Free State.

The project commenced on 01 April and is set to take a period of three years.

As the public raised its concerns, Minister Kubayi addressed some of the issues which included the ‘double-parking’ in Bloemfontein.

The minister also stated the ministry was not only building RDP houses, but also giving service sites to the public.

“This means that people may receive sites, title deeds and services like water and electricity,” she said.

“This method gives opportunity to those who would like to build their own houses, but do not have title deeds,” added Kubayi.
