The 2023/2024 season will be remembered as one of the darkest periods in Kaizer Chiefs’ illustrious history.
The team’s campaign was marred by inconsistent performances, coaching changes, and a string of disappointing results that left the Amakhosi teetering on the brink of disaster.
The season began with Molefi Ntseki at the helm, a surprise appointment by the Motaung family after they overlooked the highly decorated Nasraddine Nabi of Tunisia, who had won the treble with Young Africans of Tanzania and had since done well with AS FAR in Egypt.
Ntseki’s tenure was marked by a few notable signings, including Edson Castillo, Mduduzi Mdantsane, Pule Mmodi, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Given Msimango, and Luke Fleurs. However, the team struggled to find consistency, and their season was marked by a string of disappointing results.
After a string of inconsistent results, Ntseki was given the boot, and Cavin Johnson, who had joined the team in another department, took the helm.
Johnson’s tenure started promisingly, with the team winning three consecutive matches before the transfer window. However, he opted not to sign anyone during the transfer window, a decision that would come back to haunt the team.
The team’s woes continued, with losses to mid-table team Chippa United and relegation-threatened Richards Bay FC. These losses were followed by a home win against SuperSport United, with the team winning 2-1.
However, this victory was short-lived, as they suffered a record-setting 5-1 defeat to arch-rivals Mamelodi Sundowns FC in their next match.
This loss was one of the worst in the history of the game and marked a new low point for the Amakhosi.
The season was also marked by tragedy, with the sudden passing of Luke Fleurs, a talented young player who had shown promise on the pitch. His loss was deeply felt by the team and their fans.
As the season draws to a close, questions are being asked about the future of Kaizer Chiefs. Has the team’s golden era come to an end? Can they recover from this disastrous season, or will they continue to slide into obscurity? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the 2023/2024 season will be remembered as a season of disappointment and missed opportunities for the once-mighty Amakhosi.
