An ex-employee at Matsepes Inc. Attorneys accused of defrauding the entity over R4 million has been granted bail, as the case against accused was postponed to July, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, better know as the Hawks, said.
Spokesperson captain Christopher Singo said the accused, Herman Daniel Badenhorst appeared before the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court yesterday, 24 May, where he faced charges of fraud and money laundering.
Singo said the 34-year-old was arrested on Tuesday morning in Bloemfontein by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team.
“A case docket was registered and handed over to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team based in Bloemfontein for further investigation which culminated to the arrest of Badenhorst today, 24 May,” he said.
It is alleged that Badenhorst who was working as an Admin Clerk at Matsepes Inc. Attorneys in Bloemfontein was involved in fraudulent activities where he authorised payments from insolvent estate accounts and filed the necessary requisitions for payments to be made into his own personal bank accounts.
The incident took place between the period of February, 2018 until January 2021.
“As a result of this fraudulent activities Matsepes Inc. Attorneys was prejudiced and suffers a total loss of more than R4 million,” elaborated Singo.
The case against Badenhorst has been postponed to Monday, 18 July, for further investigation.
The accused was granted R10 000 bail.
