Collective sentence of 551 years imposed on 11 gang members in Botshabelo

A group of 11 members from the notorious Roman Gang received a collective sentence of 551 years in prison for their involvement in a series of violent crimes, including two murders and arson, that terrorized the Botshabelo community. This ruling follows a brutal attack on October 10, 2022, where victims were trapped in a burning house, highlighting the devastating impact of gang-related violence in the area.

The police revealed to Kasi Voice News that on October 10, 2022, Thabang Thipe (19), Tshepo Shomaele (20), Mahlomola Nkone (24), and Puseletso Morobi (25) were trapped in a house in M Section when gang members set it ablaze, preventing any chance of escape. the assailants exacerbated the fire by throwing a burning tire inside the building, while the victims pleaded for their lives.

Thipe was stabbed to death while attempting to escape, and though Nkone and Morobi managed to get out, they suffered severe stab and burn injuries. Shomaele, who initially survived the flames, tragically succumbed to his injuries nine days later.

The violent incident triggered a comprehensive investigation by local law enforcement, leading to multiple arrests of alleged gang members involved in the attacks. In the wake of the tragedy, further investigations revealed a pattern of gang-related violence in the area, including additional cases of murder and arson.

On October 3, 2024, Judge Mathebula sentenced the accused, which included Sello Lebusa (25), Phumzile Msebenzi (26), and Vuyo Chake (22), among others. The sentences varied but collectively amounted to 15 life terms and significant additional years for other offenses. Notably, some of the accused were arrested as minors and will serve reduced sentences.

Major general Solly Lesia, acting provincial commissioner of the Free State, commended the dedicated efforts of the investigating team, led by sergent Ephraim Rampina, and the anti-gang unit for their thorough work in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

The accused sentenced have been deemed ineligible to own firearms and will serve additional time under the Prevention of Organized Crime Act (POCA).
