The civil rights organisation, AfriForum, is heading to the Bloemfontein High Court, to call for the justice system to take harsh action against the troubled Ngwathe Local Municipality for its failure to deliver essential basic services.
Trouble is brewing at Ngwathe municipality over power and water crisis in Parys, where residents have endured years of struggle without access to water and electricity.
AfriForum has now declared a war against the municipality, as last week the organisation consulted their legal team on these underlying issues.
The crisis stems from the municipality’s non-compliance with their repayment agreement with Eskom to pay off their debt of R1.54 billion.
AfriForum says it will take the necessary steps to bring immediate relief to the community of Parys.
“People in the community have been without power and water for some time, nursing homes struggle to perform their daily functions and businesses suffer severe damage due to the constant power outages,” says Alta Pretorius, AfriForum’s district coordinator for the Mooi River.
Pretorius also said the municipality is failing in its duties to provide the community with water and they were left with no alternative but to intervene.
Tumahole residents haven’t had no running water for 15 years.
