A day filled with glimpses of excellence, ambition and vision unfolded at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Welkom Campus, for a transformative Youth Leadership Workshop on Saturday, 28 June.
It was a full-day Youth Leadership Workshop that blended inspiration, education, and empowerment under the theme “Becoming the Change for South Africa’s Digital Future.”
Hosted by Kwa Zangwa Networks (Pty) Ltd, the workshop offered more than just speeches – it became a hub of life lessons, inspiration and the shaping of tomorrow’s changemakers.
The event kicked off on a powerful note with an opening prayer and the word of the day delivered by Pastor Sinethemba Sentiwe.
“Sometimes the pain we try to avoid is the very thing God uses to build us. Depression often grows in silence — but healing begins when we face our wounds with faith and speak out,” says Pastor Sinethemba Sentiwe.
He urged young people to embrace difficult seasons of life as opportunities for growth, while also highlighting the need for mental health awareness and preventive tools to guard against depression and suicidal thoughts.
Professor Mzikayise Binza, acting campus principal at CUT, welcomed all attendees and acknowledged the collective power present in the room — from Grade 12 learners, students and esteemed guests.
“CUT is honoured to have you all here,” said Prof. Binza as he acknowledged the presence of esteemed guests.
“You need to adopt a philosophy in life that you are born with a purpose, and with a reason to understand that only true success so many people will have a bread and butter on the table – to have the will to unlock success even in another people’s lives,” he said.

Addressing Grade 12 learners directly, Prof. Binza encouraged them to take initiative in shaping their futures:
“Learners should prioritise education as it is the story that can change their lives.”
Taking centre stage in a virtual address was Bernard Matsoso currently based in Australia, an experienced educator with international teaching experience in South Korea, Japan, and Saudi Arabia, and former Acting Director at CUT. Sharing his inspiring academic journey — from the Lejweleputswa District to becoming a PhD candidate researching inclusive education, Matsoso reminded learners that great futures begin with focused intention.
“I urge you, student leaders, to be agents of change and transformation in the education sector.”
“Align your thoughts to your career paths – don’t settle for a low pass mark. Work with purpose and study higher.”
“Respect your teachers – they are your first mentors.”
He concluded with a powerful cry of “Amandla!”, igniting the spirit of youth empowerment.
Mama P.P. Zonke, Lejweleputswa District Director from the Department of Education, took the stage to deliver a powerful keynote titled “Becoming the Leader You Were Meant to Be”.
Her message centered on purpose-driven leadership, reminding learners that true leaders must be grounded, respectful and intentional about their goals.
“If you take care of the youth, it means the future is certain,” she said, reinforcing the importance of investing in young people.
Zonke highlighted five core leadership values: having a clear purpose, understanding the process of achieving goals, maintaining peace through self-introspection, respecting others as a key to people-centered leadership and pursuing education as a form of self-improvement.
Adding weight to the occasion was the presence of the executive mayor of Lejweleputswa District Municipality, Cllr Veronica Ntankumbana, who presented the purpose of the workshop -who stepped in on behalf of the Minister of Communications, currently abroad on official government commitments.
“I am here to stand in and fulfill the mandate of the Minister of Communications,” she said, assuring the audience that the event carried national significance.
The mayor praised the initiative, noting its importance in building a forward-thinking and empowered youth.
“I’m truly impressed by how young people are shaping society through such visionary initiatives,” she said.
“I vow to continue supporting youth who are determined and vision-oriented.”

Cllr Ntankumbana also extended her gratitude to educators and school communities, applauding their role in the district’s strong academic performance.
“I appreciate the work that is being done in our schools and how well they are performing — this shows that education remains a priority in Lejweleputswa.”
Her address reminded the youth of their critical role in shaping the district’s future, encouraging them to rise as solution-driven leaders in both the physical and digital spaces.
As the workshop progressed, practical support took center stage. During one of the sessions, Kwa Zangwa Networks played a key facilitation role by helping learners navigate the process of applying to higher education institutions, particularly to the CUT.
Recognising that applications are now online, the team guided learners on how to access and complete their applications, and also encouraged them to actively seek out bursary and scholarship opportunities.
This hands-on support ensured that learners not only left inspired but also equipped with actionable steps to further their education path.

As the day drew to a close, certificates of participation were awarded to all learners, followed by joyful group photos that captured the spirit of the day.
Delivering the closing remarks and vote of thanks, Phakamile Zangwa, Founder and CEO of Kwa Zangwa Networks, expressed deep appreciation to all the learners, guests, and stakeholders who made the event a success.
“We are grateful for every learner and every esteemed guest who honoured this invitation. This is not just an event — it’s a movement of empowerment. And I can proudly confirm that this is only the beginning,” said Zangwa.
His words sealed the event with renewed energy, leaving learners motivated not only to dream, but to act with confidence, clarity and purpose.
