According to recent statistics, it is revealed that around 2.2. million households in South Africa have experienced burglaries, this has increased by 14% compared to previous years.
This announcement was made by Statistician-General of South Africa, Risenga Maluleke where he was releasing results of crime victims report from the Governance, Public Safety and Justice Survey (GPSJS) 2021/22 in Tshwane, Gauteng Province today.
Unpacking the report, Maluleke said they conducted the stats from the previous five years and comparing them with past 12 months, to see how these criminal activities have either increased or decreased.
“We are looking at the previous five years, we will also look into12 months, but it is very critical that we look at what happened in the past five years because there are so many experiences there,” said Maluleke.
The report covers the experience of specific types of crime by households and individuals, the incidences, and the reporting of crime.
This includes housebreaking, theft of personal property, assault, vehicle hijacking and home robbery, among others.
“Around 2.2 million households experienced housebreaking or burglary during the past five years. The experience of housebreaking has increased by 14% from the previous year,” Maluleke said.
Maluleke said his report findings are different from the police ministry’s crime stats.
“Our survey is based on visiting households across South Africa and asking residents about their experiences in line with general safety,” he said.
