South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers have been deployed to KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng to assist law enforcement agencies amid violent protests.
On Monday, 12 July 2021, the SANDF members were seen guarding the national monuments and sites in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.
According to General Mafi Mgobozi, they have received a request for help from the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structures (NATJOINTS) to assist agencies deployed in Gauteng and KZN.
In a released statement, SANDF said the deployment is assists law enforcement agencies deployed in various parts of KZN and GP.
“The duration and number of deploying soldiers will be determined based on the assessment of the situation on the ground by the relevant law enforcement agencies.
“Furthermore, it must be emphasised that the SANDF’S deployment objective is to provide safety and a safe working environment for members of the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies whilst they carry out their constitutionally mandated law and order duties,” read the statement
According to General Mgobozi, the SANDF deployment-related information updates will follow.
Meanwhile, leader of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema said they will not allow army deployment, and the party (EFF) will join the protestors to take on soldiers.
