Paul Jacobus Notnagel (58), appeared before Kroonstad District Court on Thursday, 14 October 2021, facing charges of possession of prohibited firearms.
The 58-year-old’s arrest came after Bloemfontein Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crimes (NPVC) together with their counterparts from Welkom and Pretoria as well as SAPS Ballistics Unit conducted an operation.
On Monday, 11 October 2021, they visited a firearms dealer and a gunsmith in Kroonstad. The identified gunsmith is said to specialise in illegal barrel changing in contravention with the Firearms Control Act.
During premises search, all registers and firearms were inspected. Police discovered 235 altered firearms (rifle) barrels; four sets of steel stamp stencils; and a shotgun reported stolen in Norwood case.
They arrested Notnagel and seized all firearms during the operation.
He was released on a R10 000 bail and the case was postponed to 11 January 2022 for further investigation.
