A bogus prophet is facing 13 years behind bars after he ripped off scores of people their hard earned money with hope that they will get millions.
The Odendaalsrus Regional Court handed down a hefty sentence to the 28-year-old foreign national for fraud.
The convicted prophet, allegedly defrauded employees their pensions, as he urged them to quite their jobs in bid to multiple their pensions into multiple millions.
“The convicted fraudster, Mike Sembuse from Uganda was sentenced to 13 years in jail.
“This accused took almost a year in dealing with victims to believe in him,” said Lejweleputswa police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng.
Thakeng said the police were on a manhunt for the bogus prophet for months, until he slipped, where he robbed off the mine worker his pension funds, after he told him to resign from his job.
It is alleged that the mine worker and his wife were approached by a fake prophet in Odendaalsrus, who told the victim to resign from his job for non-existing millions.
“Then this bogus prophet made the concoction to be hot and suddenly there was a miracle money inside the same pot,” explained Thakeng.
“Then the wife was prophesied that she has a sickness and was healed by the same fake prophet. Then that made the couple to believe this man who always pray to God and the couple’s ancestors.
“They were told ancestors want to give them money and they must never tell anyone. It’s a secret!” revealed Thakeng.
“The victim was told to borrow cash that amounts to R30 000 and to buy a trunk, the money was put inside and they were told inside [that] it is R3 million and R30 000.
“He was told to resign at the mining company and he got R165 000, which was put inside the same trunk.
“The victim was told to come after seven days and the miner went home in Lesotho and thereafter he tried to call the fake prophet but all in vain. He was nowhere to be found,” said Thakeng.
In another similar case brought in court, a female prison warder was robbed off R1.3 million and another female mine worker lost R300 000 with the same modus operandi.
Thakeng said there’s allegedly another the third case, where another miner was mugged R750 000.
“These are cases are currently under investigation at Odendaalsrus Police Station,” said Thakeng.
“Employees are sternly warned to be careful about these bogus prophets who are roaming in our streets,” he cautioned.
“Their mission is to defraud workers from one town to the other. It’s clear after they defraud a victim they move to another town to target another victim
“When you see your close relative buy a trunk alert other relatives so that help can be sought at an early stage,” Thakeng warned.
