As part of her visit to Matjhabeng municipality ahead of the upcoming Presidential Imbizo tomorrow, Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment deputy minister Makhotso Sotyu handed over a waste compactor truck worth R3 million on Thursday.

Joint by the municipality’s jubilant executive mayor Thanduxolo Khalipa, Sotyu said this waste collection truck will help the municipality to fasten its service delivery to the community of Matjhabeng.

Over the past years, the community of Matjhabeng, had to endure filth in their areas as a result of lack of sufficient trucks to collect waste.

The intervention by the deputy minister emanates from her 2019 visit to Matjhabeng where she was made aware of the waste management challenges faced by the municipality, especially waste collection, recycling and landfill site management.

On a sunny Thursday, minister Sotyu asserted that government is concerned of the state of ailing townships, and the President’s visit, will form part of assessments to ensure integrity of townships around Free State is restored once again.

The hand over was spearheaded with a clean-up campaign, where the deputy minister and mayor Khalipa were joined by Free State Department of Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental MEC Makalo Mohale and Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Mxolisi Dukwana.
