CUT students vow to continue with protests

Student leaders at the Central University of Technology (CUT) are forging ahead to continue with the protest, folliwng a violent protest that led to the arrest of five students from the Bloemfontein-based campus last week.

Five students were arrested during a protest at the Bloemfontein campus on Thursday, where the students became violent and started pelting security officers and police with stones and bottles.

With the five due to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court today, student leaders says they will boycott the exams and will down tools for the release of the arrested students and also, they will forge ahead with the protest until their demands are met by the university’s management.

The student movement, South African Students Congress (Sasco) addressed that they will stand in solidarity with the suspended SRC president from the Welkom Campus, who they have labelled his suspension as vague, as it is alleged that he was bullied by the university management.

Another student movement, EFF Student Command (EFFSC) has pleaded with students not to succumb to alleged threats of management of the institution.

“We called on on the provincial employees of the EFF to join students on the ground as part of resolutions from a meeting the EFFSC had with its branch leadership at both Bloemfontein and Welkom campuses on Friday,” said the student command in a issued statement shared with students.

Following the protest, Classes were shut indefinitely at the Bloemfontein-based campus UKZN since Thursday.
