A landmark honor: Pumeza Matshikiza recognized on Roodepoort Theatre’s wall of fame

Celebrated South African soprano Pumeza Matshikiza has officially been inducted into the prestigious Wall of Fame at Roodepoort Theatre. The honour was presented during the Joburg City Theatres’ 45th Anniversary Gala, held on Heritage Day, 24 September 2025.

This special occasion was part of the theatre’s “Revealing of the Stars” event, a celebration of artistic excellence that recognised Matshikiza’s outstanding contributions to the arts and her powerful influence on generations of South African performers.

Reflecting on the recognition, Matshikiza shared her heartfelt gratitude:

“Today, my heart sings louder than ever! This Heritage Day was incredibly special. I was deeply honoured to be inducted into the Joburg City Theatres Hall of Fame during Roodepoort Theatre’s 45th Anniversary, a moment that feels carved into history itself.”

She also expressed a deep sense of humility and connection to her cultural roots:

“I stand humbled, carrying the dreams of every young person from the townships of South Africa, from the rural areas where my forefathers came from — my musical grandfathers, Makurwana Magulezinyanga – ngethongo and Mbuleli Nkuhlu.”

Her induction honours not only her remarkable personal journey, from township beginnings to prestigious international stages, but also her ongoing commitment to uplifting South African music and heritage. Fresh from a performance in Rome, her return to South Africa highlights her dedication to her roots and the local creative community.

As part of her visit, Matshikiza will host an exclusive masterclass for music students at Wits University, where she will share her knowledge and mentor the next generation of musicians.

She will also headline a one-night-only Heritage Musical Concert on Sunday, 28 September 2025, at 3:00 PM, at the historic Rand Club in Johannesburg. With limited tickets available, the event promises a captivating evening of operatic arias blended with rich South African musical influences.
