Welkom Police have launched a manhunt to trace a group of armed suspects in connection with copper cable that was robbed in offices of Eskom at Blenheim Avenue in Riebeeckstad on Friday, 27 May.
Lejweleputswa police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng says the incident allegedly took place at approximately 10pm at night.
“The Security Officer alleged that, he was at his workplace busy with routine foot patrols around the premises when he saw an African male who was hiding at the corner of the building. The man then cocked the firearm and pointed at him,” said Thakeng.
He further alleges that the suspect took the hand radio which was on his chest and pushed him.
“Suddenly a group of about 15 African males appeared from the corner of the premises and asked him where was the other security officer.
“He told them he was in the guard room and they all went to the guard room where they found his colleague.
“Suspects tied them with wires and were forced inside the store room,” addressed Thakeng.
It is reported that the padlock was broken and the copper wire and pieces of copper cables worth almost R27 681 were taken.
The suspects then left the scene.
“Both security officers managed to untie themselves and sought help and Welkom police attended the scene,” Thakeng said.
A case of business robbery was registered for further investigation by the police.
Thakeng says, for anyone with information which can lead to the arrests of these armed robbers to contact Detective Sergeant Tsie Matlokotsi of Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes on his cellphone number: 078 758 5658 or alternatively to contact Police Emergency number on 08600 10111.
