Dr. Mantoa Molete, Manager of the Department of Communication Science at CUT’s Welkom campus, has ascended to a pivotal role as the newly appointed Chairperson of the Board of the African Languages Association of Southern Africa (ALASA).
The appointment was confirmed following ALASA’s recent conference in Durban, held from 9 to 12 July 2024. According to CUT spokesperson Seithati Semenokane, Molete’s selection underscores her exceptional leadership qualities and extensive contributions to the field.
In her new capacity, Molete will collaborate closely with the editorial team of the South African Journal of African Languages (SAJAL).
Expressing her enthusiasm, Molete emphasized the significance of her role in expanding platforms and access to enhance the institution’s influence in the language fraternity. “Our focus remains on promoting research in indigenous language development, planning, and policies,” she affirmed.
Molete’s appointment is a significant milestone, marking her as only the second black woman to hold the Chairperson position since ALASA’s inception in 1979.
Over the decades, ALASA has evolved into a prominent organization within the Southern Region, championing engagement and collaboration among researchers, students, and educators in African languages and literature.
The association’s mission includes advancing research, fostering language development, and promoting effective oral and written communication in a multilingual society.
Furthermore, ALASA plays a crucial role in language planning and policy, educational policy, and establishing connections with kindred organizations.
“This appointment not only acknowledges Dr. Molete’s leadership but also reinforces ALASA’s commitment to advancing African languages,” Semenokane affirmed.
Dr. Mantoa Molete’s tenure promises to usher in a new era of advocacy and scholarly achievement within ALASA, setting a course for enhanced research and development in African language studies across the region.
