In separate incidents, a matriculant battles for his life and a fifth grader dies after both get stabbed in Free State.

During a fight at Kegomoditswe Primary School, a fifth grader dies after allegedly getting stabbed by a sixth grader.

The second incident, involves a matriculant stabbed with a plate in the eye by a fellow learner on Thursday, 04 November 2021.

The incident occurred during dinner time at a matric study camp held at the Bloemfontein Military Base.

Department of Basic Education stated occurance of events as follows:

Learners queued for their dinner when the alleged perpetrator tried to cut the queue.

“When other learners attempted to stop him, he hit one with a plate on the head and stabbed him with a piece from the plate in the eye,” stated the Provincial Education Spokesperson, Howard Ndaba.

The victim had to immediately receive medical attention at the hospital.

Ndaba further stated both learners wrote their Mathematics examination, but the school removed the alleged perpetrator from study camp.

To avoid such unpleasant incidents, the school requested parents to instead pack plastic plates for learners.

In closing, Ndaba stated the SGB will soon meet to discuss disciplinary measures to take against the alleged perpetrator.

A week ago, on Thursday, 28 November 2021, a 17-year-old gets stabbed in the chest and loses his life.

Federation of Associations of Governing Bodies of South Africa (FEDSAS) condemned school stabbings.

FEDSAS CEO stated the education department needed to have safety committees to ensure safety at schools. He further highlighted the importance of the community’s involvement in combating the issue at hand.
